During the Midpoint Thesis Project Presentation, it’s my job to convince the committee that my idea not only has merit, but that I have the capabilities to pull it off. More than simply presenting a thesis idea, the goal was to garner approval of the project that will embody it.
Is the topic too small? Is it too large? Does the topic have depth or breadth? Does it have legs? Does the topic have strong visual possibilities? Is this idea marketable? Does the idea make ME marketable? Is the topic right for a graphic design thesis? Will anyone care? Is it challenging enough? Is my approach to the topic new? Is it timely? Will the project change anything?
Faced with questions like these, it’s no wonder why so many students struggle with their big idea. I personally talked through dozens of ideas with friends and colleagues before one (in my mind) clearly beat out the rest. Even then, there was plenty to do in terms of editing and rephrasing before getting it just right for the committee.
Find out how I did and read my thesis proposal in the next post.
